Wales Best Pizza 2017 - Welsh Italian Awards

We are chuffed to bits with winning Best Pizza in Wales at the Welsh Italian Awards

We are very humbled to be nominated alongside such great pizza places across Wales. Big thanks to all the pizza lovers out there. The pizza power is strong in Wales.

The inaugural Welsh awards were held at the Mercure Hotel, Cardiff. It was a nice change for us Ffwrnes bois to get out of those t-shirts and stripey aprons and tart ourselves up a bit.

There were 12 awards up for grabs. Plenty of recognisable names for the Cardiff folk but the rest of the country was well represented. There were awards for Best Restaurant, Best Cafe, Best Family Restaurant and the competition was fierce. Best Pasta and Best Chef required cook offs for the judges on the day of the awards so there was some serious heat to the proceedings.

We were up for Best Pizza where we had to cook pizza for independent judges. Ralph Carlone was the taster judge - twice winner of the Scottish Italian Awards, previous winner of the Campionato Italiano Assoluto di Pizza and a baker who specialises in pizza preparation. A tough crowd to say the least. We were required to make a Margherita, just the one. A pizza named after a Queen of Italy, our pizza had to reach the heights worthy of royalty. It wasn't just cooking the perfect pizza, we were grilled over ingredients, processes, fermentation times - the whole pizza making process. Our pizzas cook in 90 seconds - this was the longest 90 seconds imaginably. It all came down to one Margherita.........

WE WON!!!!!

Absolutely over the moon. There was a long wait for the Best Pizza award, but totally worth it. There was a wonderful atmosphere all night and it was great to get to meet owners of celebrated establishments and discover new ones which we can't wait to visit.

We celebrated hard resulting in some hefty hangovers the next day.

Roll on for the 2018 competition.
